Melissa Word is a dance artist making performances in Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. She founded and curates KIN, a mobile performance series in Birmingham where artists from across the Southeast present work in forgotten, industrial spaces. In 2010, she co-founded Triptych Collective, a bevy of performance artists making civically minded, multidisciplinary performances in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has guest-lectured and choreographed at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she also graduated with honors in 2011. Recently, her solo work was presented at the Women’s Performance Showcase in Charlotte, NC and at KIN in Birmingham, AL. As a dancer, she is currently working with Atlanta-based choreographers Erik Thurmond and T. Lang. Themes inherent in her body-based creative process are often found lurking in her other making dalliances including assemblage and found-object art and prose writing.
As a part of “East Lake After Hours,” Melissa Word will be giving an Adult Movement class at Estate Liquidators, Dance in Public Places venue Friday October 23rd from 6-8 pm as well as on “ East Lake Artist Village Market Day,” Oct 24th from 10am-12pm.
